Prefolds and flats are the classic cloth diaper that many people think of when they hear "cloth diaper". Despite their history, these diapers are still chosen by many! They are very economical, very practical, and very dependable. They are truly a workhorse diaper! These diapers need to be paired with a cover. Bleached or Unbleached Cotton? Bleached prefold/flat diapers are made with bleached cotton yarn. Cotton is naturally a light brown color. Not only does the bleaching process turn cotton fibers white, but it also removes the natural cotton oils in the fibers. This means reduced prep time when you receive your prefolds or flats as there are no natural oils to remove during the prep. Bleached diapers can be wash/dried once before using. However, the bleaching process reduces the strength of the cotton fibers and the prefold/flat will be slightly less durable. The bleaching process can lead to additional pollutants being released to the environment through airborne and waterborn emissions. Recent improvements in bleaching technology has reduced but not eliminated this impact. Unbleached prefold/flat diapers have many of their natural cotton oils remaining in the fabric, so they tend to be softer and last longer than bleached cloth diapers. Unbleached prefold/flat cloth diapers must be washed at least 2-3 times before they become absorbant. You can test the absorbency by making a pocket of the diaper and slowly pouring 1/2 cup of liquid into the diaper. If the liquid pools and does not soak in fairly quickly, wash them again. You may have to wash these up to 5 times before they become fully absorbant. |
