Leopard sharks pose no threat to humans, and only one encounter has been recorded in the last century. The current population trend of the leopard shark is unknown, although they are defined as a species of least concern by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. They are sometimes caught by commercial fisheries and recreational fishers, but it is unknown if such activities have a strong effect on their global population.
A type of houndshark, the leopard shark can be found all along the Pacific coast of North America and Mexico. Although they are relatively small in comparison to many types of requiem shark, they can still grow to be five feet long.
