Safari LTD | Monterey Bay Aquarium Sea Life ~ LARGE HUMPBACK WHALE
During the height of the whaling industry in the 17th and 18th century, the humpback whale was fished nearly to extinction. Thankfully, their stocks have recovered since legislation was introduced in the 1960’s. They are currently classified as least concern on the IUCN’s red list, although they are still somewhat threatened by large fishing nets and collisions with vessels in shipping lanes.
A species of baleen whale found in oceans around the world, humpback whales are arguably the most iconic type of whale. They are known for their beautiful and haunting songs, which the males while sing and repeat for hours at a time.
