Unlike other mammals, young wildebeest are able to stand upright shortly after birth, and can walk with their herd a few days after being born! Because wildebeests are constantly on the move and rely on their herd for protection, being self-reliant at an early age is vital.
History:
Like many animals native to niche parts of Africa, wildebeest numbers are unfortunately declining. Because wildebeests rely so much on migration patterns throughout the southern portion of the continent, any human development in those areas greatly hinders their ability to travel. However, all species of wildebeest are still classified as least concern on the conservation status spectrum, allowing time to figure out a solution to their dwindling numbers. We’re sure this precious wildebeest baby would love to go home with you, but it would feel much safer if it had its mama, or even better, its whole herd!
